Our Year 3 Curriculum
Autumn Term
In Autumn Term, Year 3 begin the school year with our exciting topic, Predators. Building on their prior knowledge of dinosaurs from Year 1, children explore the Mesozoic era in History and enjoy identifying different dinosaurs based on the period they lived in. They also research a range of fascinating prehistoric animals from the Stone Age, including mastodons, sabre‑toothed tigers, giant ground sloths and woolly mammoths. In Geography, children deepen their understanding of the world by learning how to locate the four points of a compass and discovering where different predators live across countries and continents. They compare the biomes these animals inhabit and discuss why some species are becoming endangered or extinct. In D.T, children investigate mechanisms and design their own pneumatic predator. Using air pressure, they create a model with a mouth that opens and closes, making this a wonderfully hands‑on and memorable sequence of learning.
In Science, we learn all about rocks, fossils and soils. Children go on a rock hunt and begin exploring different rocks, fossils and soils. They compare and describe rocks based on their appearance and physical properties, learn how fossils are formed and recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. One of the most exciting parts of the unit is making their own fossils, which the children always enjoy!

Given out each Thursday and returned the following Monday.
Expectations:
- 10 new spellings to learn each week via Spelling Shed
- Reading 4x per week. Please support your child when hearing them read at home, asking questions about what they have read and signing their reading records as frequently as possible to develop their skills and love for reading.
- TT Rockstars- In Year 3 we reinforce the 2 ,5 and 10 times tables as well as learning the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
- One piece of English.
- One piece of Maths.
