Our Year 2 Curriculum

Autumn Term

During the first part of our autumn term, children in Year 2 explore the topic - 'Wriggle and Crawl.' Children explore different kinds of minibeasts and where you may find them. In art, children sketch a range of minibeasts and create their own out of clay. In Geography, children explore where to find particular minibeasts in the both in the UK and other countries. This allows the children to discuss hot and cold habitats, using their prior learning.

In Science, children explore the topic - 'Animals Including Humans.' Children focus on animals and their offspring. They also look at which animals lay eggs and which do not. Children also learn about habitats. 

During the second part of our autumn term, sees our focus switch to the 'Seaside.' Children explore how the seaside has changed over time. In Geography,they learn how to use maps and aerial photographs to explore the land around the seaside. In History, children identify the differences between the seaside in the 19th century and in the 21st century. In DT, children make a hand puppet for a Punch and Judy show. In Art, children create a seaside landscape using sketching and painting techniques.

Science lessons focus on, 'Living Habitats.' Children sort things into alive, dead and never been alive. Furthermore, the children will explore the types of plants and animals that live in a seaside habitat.

 

Spring Term

During the first part of spring term, children explore the topic, 'Towers, Tunnels and Turrets.' Children learn all about the history of castles, their locations and their features. In art, children sketch and create different pictures of castles with a range of tools. In DT, children learn about cooking and how to make a vegetable stew.

In Science, the children study, 'Everyday Materials.' Children learn what a material is and the different materials objects are made from. Children learn about the properties of materials and recognise that some materials are natural and others are man-made / synthetic.

During the second part of Spring term, children will continue to explore, 'Towers, Tunnels and Turrets.' In Science, the children learn about, 'Super Scientists.' In this topic, the children conduct a number of different experiments including: the effect of gravity on different objects, what happens to light when it passes through different transparent objects and the five senses. 

In Science, the children study, 'Everyday Materials.' Children learn what a material is and the different materials objects are made from. Children learn about the properties of materials and recognise that some materials are natural and others are man-made / synthetic.

Summer Term

During the first part of Summer term, children explore the topic - 'Land Ahoy!' Children learn about different kinds of explorers and pirate themes. In Art, children sketch parts a pirate flag and a treasure chest. In Geography, children look at the physical and human features of a coast. In History, the children learn the names and lives of different adventurers and explorers. In DT, the children design and make a boat out of wood.

In Science, the children explore the topic - 'Plants.' In this topic, the children learn about different kinds of plants. The children also learn about the different parts of a plant. In the second part of Summer term, children learn about how to plant and look after seeds, and learn about how they will grow.

During the second part of Summer Term, our focus shifts to, 'Magical Medicines.' In this topic, the children explore different medicines. The children also learn about significant figures from the past including Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. In Art, children use chalk to create NHS-themed graffiti. In DT, children make a hospital out of junk modelling materials.

PE Days

  • PE days: Tuesdays and Fridays

 

Homework

  • Homework and spellings are given out every Thursday and should be returned by the following Tuesday.

Expectations:

  • New spellings to learn each week - these will be set on Spelling Shed.
  • Reading 5x per week.
  • Maths homework.
