Our Year 1 Curriculum

Autumn Term

During the first part of Autumn term, children in Year 1 explore a topic called ‘Dinosaur Planet’. In History, the children learn about different types of dinosaurs and the different theories behind why they became extinct. In Geography, we explore the dinosaur’s prehistoric landscapes and where different bones were dug up in different countries across the world. Art lessons focus on creating dinosaurs in different ways including drawing, painting and using different materials. In DT, the children learn about mechanisms and they then create their own moving dinosaur using a slider.

In Science, the children look at the features that make up the human body and label each body part on a diagram. We learn about different everyday activities that we complete daily and discuss what parts of our bodies are to be used to complete them. We look at and explore our 5 senses (touch, taste, smell, sight and hear) and talk about what parts of our body allows us to use these senses.

In the second part of Autumn term, we learn all about London in our Bright Lights, Big City topic. Our History lessons focus on The Great Fire of London. We will create a timeline showing the order that the events happened and we learn about what the houses looked like in 1666. We also learn about Samuel Pepys and how he wrote a diary to record the events. In our Art lessons we recreate paintings of The Great Fire of London using paint, chalk and sketching pencils. DT lessons focus on buildings in London. We use junk model materials to recreate famous landmarks around the capital city. In Geography, we learn about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and their capital cities.

Our Science lessons focus on learning all about animals. We learn about different animal groups and how to identify which group an animal belongs to. We also discuss how to look after different pets and we create a tally chart of the most popular pets in our class. At the end of this unit, we carry out an investigation to see which birds we can see on our playground. We make a bird feeder and wait to see which birds come to eat the seeds!

Spring Term

In the first part of Spring term, we explore toys from the past in our 'Memory Box' topic. Our History lessons focus on learning all about toys from the past and how we still play with some of these toys today. We also learn about how school life has changed since Victorian times. In Art lessons, we learn about the artist, Piet Mondrian. We create our own memory boxes and decorate them in the style of Piet Mondrian. In DT, we use different woodwork tools to create a moving vehicle. In our Geography lessons, we explore the features of cities, towns and villages. We also learn about how the weather is different around the world and we create a weather chart to record the weather over a short period of time. We also have the opportunity to visit Weston Park, where we are able to learn about toys from the past by playing with them and having a go at making our own.

In Science, we learn all about the seasons. We discuss what clothes we need to wear during different seasons and what hobbies we can do in different seasons. We have lots of fun going on a senses walk, where we walk around the outdoor environment and discuss what we can see, hear, feel and smell in Spring. We also carry out an investigation where we create a rain gauge and measure how much rainfall we get in a week.
